Small talk

Why do we do it? Why do we bother? Who is the super genius who thought of this as a way to fill in moments of silence between strangers. Whatever happened to strangers remaining strangers? Why do I have to make small talk in some of the most awkward situations? If you step on my foot why can’t you say “sorry” and move on while I wince and curse under my breathe? Why is it that women like to talk to each other in the bathrooms? Why can’t we have the “eyes forward, mind your own business” rule that men have? Why do I have to talk to the guy behind me in line at the grocery store? What’s so wrong with getting my food and walking out of SAFEWAY without speaking to anyone who doesn’t work there?

WHAT MOTHER-IDIOT INVENTED SMALL TALK?

Agreed,

Small talk's name describes itself. It's ridiculous. If we HAVE to talk about anything, it should be matters of significance. It's shouldn't be "oh, that's a nice dress (hat, scarf, etc...)". It should be along the lines of "I have lots of money and I can easily show you how you can make as much as I do". And even that should only be uttered to the most receptive of people. If anyone responds with one word answers, nothing should be said from that point forward. Otherwise, the perpetrator risks getting the ice cold blank stare in return.

During the days following September 11, 2001, everyone was speaking to each other. That's fine. The was a monumental and catastrophic event that warranted serious discussions between strangers. "How cute fluffy is"....Nah. Can't help you dawg.
